Introduction to First Class (in Germany)
Goal of the lesson: Students should be confident with the basics of FC by having a demonstration by the teacher and by trying it on their own.
The basic knowledge: key - boarding using the mouse introduction to the main buttons of the menue (FC and WWW are presented in English in comparison with the German based program), e.g copy and paste, save, delete, send… Students should work in mixed-ability groups so that they can learn from each other or help each other! (group work is especially important if the learners have a variety of expertise and language skills)
First step: disussion: What do you know about computers? What can you use computers for? Do you have a computer at home? The results should be written down on large pieces of paper so that the students have the possibillity to post them on the walls and have a look whenever they want. This table can always be enlarged if new problems, questions etc come up.
Second step: Teacher starts all computers but students cannot work with the program yet because the teacher has the role of the administrator and is the only one who can work with the program. The students can only watch. Ž - teacher opens First Class - teacher shows how to log in (personal passwords are given to the students later) - desktop appears: teacher tells the students what their project folder looks like Can you find our project folder?Where is it? - teacher klicks on the project folder and the cours conference appears
Third
step:
Fourth step: students' activity: Try to write and send a message to one of your classmates. Don't forget to address it to the person of your choice. (Students are now able to use the computers on their own.)
Fifth step: -teacher is administrator again: shows how to open the messages - students can try out how to open their messages
Sixth step: students have to close all the folders which are open and switch off the computers.
