Lesson Plans
Starting an email project in elementary school
Lesson 1: First contact with
email partners/introducing oneself
Material/Equipment:
-
computer
(lab) with Internet access
-
software
(e. g. First Class) to exchange information via the Internet
-
scanner
-
paper
(white, coloured), coloured pencils, pens etc. (for the letters)
-
dictionary
(German – English)
Detailed Description of the lesson
Task 1:
The pupils start the computers and log onto the system (must have been
trained before). Pupils are given the Internet address of their
collaborative school and should have a look at it (for information).
Task 2:
Pupils will read their partners’ introduction letters, which are
already in the mail inbox, and discuss them with their neighbours.
Task 3:
Pupils have to write their own letters introducing themselves to their
partners. They can use a dictionary or ask the teacher for support.
(Pupils that are ready can improve their letters with drawings, photos
etc. or help other students). Then they give the letters to the teacher
who is responsible for scanning and sending them.
Homework:
Think of your hobbies, collect pictures.
Didactical considerations:
-
transferring
previous knowledge (writing letters, using the computer, introducing
oneself)
-
building
up a personal relationship makes tasks authentic
-
it
is exciting for pupils to work with computers
-
motivating
because they get in contact with native speakers
-
mother
tongue speakers have already sent their letters so pupils have an
outline how to do it/orientation
Lesson 2: Exchanging
information on a topic
Material/Equipment:
-
computer
(lab) with Internet access
-
software
(e. g. First Class) to exchange information via the Internet
-
scanner
-
paper
(white, coloured), coloured pencils, pens etc. (for the letters)
-
dictionary
(German – English)
Detailed Description of the lesson
Task 1:
After having started the computers, the pupils check their mail. Their
partners should have sent an answer to the previous letter. They will
also have said something about their favourite hobbies. Pupils will have
time to read the letters and discuss them in class.
Task 2:
Pupils will formulate an answer (on paper) by talking about their own
hobbies. They are free to include any questions or remarks they want to
add. They can also add photos or pictures (by sticking them onto the
letter). Again the teacher is ready to help the students.
Task 3:
Then they give the letters to the teacher who is responsible for
scanning and sending the letters.
Didactical considerations:
-
transferring previous
knowledge (writing letters, using the computer, introducing oneself)
-
working on authentic
task/exchange of information
-
improving relationship
with partners
-
partners have already sent
their letters so pupils have an outline how to do it/orientation
