The term “political education” is a literal translation of the German term “politische Bildung”. In German, “politische Bildung” refers to subjects and topics at school, as well as in the context of extra-curricular education, dealing with issues of politics and the communication of social-scientific knowledge. In English speaking countries, terms such as “civics”, “civic education”, “citizenship education”, and “social studies” are more established in order to refer to the communication of political issues in an educational context. The term “Didactics of social sciences”, names the scientific discipline dealing with the empirical, theoretical, and historical research of learning and teaching “political education”.
