The Department of English at JLU

Teaching and research in the Department of English covers the various areas of English Language and Linguistics, English and American Literature and Culture and Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). Our degree courses strongly encourage an international as well as an interdisciplinary perspective. In terms of teaching and research the Department of English is closely linked with other JLU departments as well as with the International Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture (GCSC).

English and American Literature and Culture: The University of Giessen offers cutting-edge programs in literary and cultural studies. In cultural studies you will develop methods for analyzing Anglophone cultures and their representations. You can focus on either literary or cultural studies, or combine the two.

English Language and Linguistics

Linguistic research in Giessen puts special emphasis on – but is not restricted to – the in-depth and computer-based analysis of large collections of authentic spoken and written texts, i.e. corpora.

Teaching English as a Foreign Language: The TEFL section of the English department deals with a variety of issues concerning the teaching and learning of English in educational contexts ranging from primary to secondary school and adult education. Our research and our teacher education courses focus on ways of teaching English both as a global and a foreign language with respect to its literatures and cultures. Among our special research interests are the teaching of language and culture through literary texts, the teaching of English to young learners and the use of digital media in the English language classroom.
