The Department of Applied Microbiology has two research groups headed by Prof. Dr. Sylvia Schnell and Prof. Dr. Dr.-Ing. P. Kämpfer. The Department is responsible for Bachelor- and Master courses in Applied Microbiology for students of Environmental Management, Agriculture, “Agrobiotechnology” and Nutritional Sciences. Research projects are focused on microbial processes in environmentally important areas, like wastewater treatment, composting and bigas-formation. The compositions of microbial communities and their roles in the specific processes are investigated with both classical microbiological and molecular methods. A main aim of these projects is the transfer of new research findings into practice.
