Hypothesis and Research Questions for SEPA2010
SEPA2010 will pave the way towards an international research agenda
in many non-technical disciplines dealing with Solar Power from deserts
in Africa. The overall hypothesis for the workshop will be as follows: On
behalf of a substantial energy co-operation between African and
European countries, economic political, social, geographical, historical
and juridical aspects have to be carefully considered in an
international, interdisciplinary framework in order to ensure a
successful implementation.

Since the formation of the SEPA Working Group at the Justus-Liebig-University Giessen in 2006, the Energy Partnership between Europe and Africa has grown from a technical vision to a real project facilitated by recent developments like the Solar Plan of the Mediterranean Union, the Desertec Industrial Initiative (DII) and French Transgreen initiative with an expected investment of several hundred billions of Euros. Already during the SEPA workshops SEPA08 and SEPA09, the participants focused on issues of economic and legal feasibility as well as acceptability issues and geographical aspects of the African countries. The regional consideration was broadened through the active participation of scientists from West Africa (Senegal) and Southern Africa (Namibia), where perfect conditions for solar thermal power plants are accompanied by an increasing energy demand. The goal of SEPA2010 is to gain first-hand information on the activities of DII and Mediterranean Union and by including African and European perspectives, to translate this into concrete research needs at the international and interdisciplinary level. The formation of a Desertec Academic Initiative as a medium goal is supposed to gain momentum through the networking of international actors in the workshop SEPA2010. A poster session will be offered to present research work on additional aspects of Solar Power in African countries.

Das SEPA-Team präsentiert sich in diesem Jahr auch auf der Messe „Leben und Genießen 2010 - die neue MittelhessenSchau“,
die diesmal eine Sonderschau „Afrika“ zeigt.
Zwei Wissenschaftler der JLU halten Vorträge über ihre Arbeit:
Am Freitag, 5. November 2010, 14:00 Uhr referiert der afrikanische Doktorand Désiré Tchigankong Noubissié über „Probleme des Stromzugangs in Afrika: DESERTEC als Ausweg“.
Am Sonntag, 7. November 2010, 12:00 Uhr spricht Prof. Dr. Michael Düren, Gründungsmitglied der DESERTEC Stiftung, über „DESERTEC: Eine Chance für Europa“.
