Asia Link “Human Resources Development in the Study of Nucleic Acids”
From November 2005 the European Commission funded an Asia-Link-Project “Human Resources Development in the Study of Nucleic Acids” with the Justus-Liebig-University in Giessen (Germany), the International University Bremen (Germany), the Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas (FORTH) in Heraklion (Crete), the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Shanghai (China) for 3 years.
Maintenance, integrity and faithful transmission of genetic information is of central importance for all living organisms. The majority of known diseases are due to or accompanied by malfunctioning processes involving genetic material, i.e. nucleic acids. Education and research in this area is pertinent to all life sciences. The aim of the Asia Link Programme “Human Resources Development in the Study of Nucleic Acids” was to initiate long lasting collaborations between Asian and European scientists for academic teaching and research on nucleic acids and enzymes that act on nucleic acids. In pursuit of this aim, young scientists from Asia were hosted by European partners to work for up to six months on projects of common interest. Selected young faculty members from the Asian partners were given the chance to participate in teaching and research activities in European institutions. Two summer schools and two workshops in Asia and Europe, respectively, extended and consolidated the impact of the programme.

The Asia Link Programme is designed to foster cooperation between the European Union and Asia in the field of higher education. Projects within this programme should serve as a framework for a broad range of activities aimed towards promoting mutual understanding, exchange and collaborations between Europe on one side and China and India on the other side.
