Foreign Language Proficiency

If you are a foreign student wishing to take a complete degree in German at JLU, you will have to show that you have acquired sufficient proficiency in the German language to allow you to embark successfully on a course of study here.

If you will be spending one or two semesters at JLU Giessen on an exchange program (such as ERASMUS, ISEP, or an institutional partnership agreement) you are not required to demonstrate proficiency in German by means of the examinations specified below. We recommend, however, that you participate in one of our German language courses.

The information provided in the pages that follow is intended for prospective students interested in applying for a complete degree course in German at JLU Giessen. If you want to apply for a degree course in English you have to show that you have sufficient knowledge of English. Please refer to the pages of the respective degree course or these pages for English language prerequisites.

Please read carefully the following guidelines on the German language requirements for admission to and enrolment at JLU, as well as the information provided for full-time students concerning the German Courses at the International Office. All of this information is of crucial importance for the success of your application for admission to JLU.

German-Language Prerequisites for Admission and Matriculation

If you are a student wishing to take a complete degree at JLU in German and you did not get your general qualification for university entrance (e.g. A-levels, Abitur) in a German-speaking country or from a recognized German school abroad you will have to show that you have acquired sufficient proficiency in the German language. The German language prerequisites for admission (in January or July) are lower than the prerequisites for matriculation (in April or October).
