Schools and Kindergartens
|
School attendance in Germany is compulsory for children between 6 and 18 years of age. If you have children in this age-range with you in Giessen, you must register them at a school.
Here you will find a list of all schools in the district of Giessen and Vogelsberg, arranged according to school type. Or you can check here individually for all schools within the municipality of Giessen. In special cases, it is possible to obtain an exemption from school attendance for your child. For answers to queries about schooling, contact the local schools authority: Staatliches Schulamt für den Landkreis Gießen und den Vogelsbergkreis Bahnhofstr. 82–86 35390 Gießen Phone: 0641-969560 / Fax: 0641-9695333 Email: poststelle@gi.ssa.hessen.de If you have a child with you that is younger than 6 years, you can enrol it in a kindergarten. There are church- and state-run kindergartens as well as voluntary associations. These are basically all open to your child, and enrolment takes place directly at the kindergarten itself. Kindergartens are fee-paying institutions, with the charge being generally proportional to your income. You can find a list of Giessen's kindergartens and day crèches here. It is, however, advisable for you to ask your departmental contact as early as possible to inquire whether the kindergarten you are interested in has a place available. JLU also offers events and care facilities for children. The following links may offer you further assistance with any questions you have about non-parental child-care:
