Public Transport / Traveling by Car

Within Giessen, the municipal bus services run until around midnight at quarter- and half-hour intervals.

The bus network also covers the suburbs of Rödgen, Wieseck, Klein-Linden, Allendorf, and Lützellinden, as well as the outlying townships of Wettenberg and Heuchelheim. A University circle line (Line 10) connects the various campuses. A one-way fare costs €1.40. For a complete schedule of fares and timetables within Giessen and for the surrounding villages, check the website of Giessen Utilities (Stadtwerke Gießen).

For more distant destinations, we recommend the website of the Rhine–Main Public Transport Network and the homepage of the Deutsche Bahn.

If you have brought your own car to Giessen, you need to make sure you possess a valid national driver's license; this may have to be translated into German. You are allowed to drive your own car in Germany for six months with your own home license. Before this period expires, you must apply for a six-month extension. Please note that an international driver's license (which is usually issued without a driving test) is not a substitute for your home driver's license.

If you have questions about driving in Germany, contact the local licensing authority:

Führerscheinstelle Gießen:

Bachweg 9

35398 Gießen

Phone: 0641 / 9232290

Fax: 0641 / 9232259

We advise you to try not to use your car in the downtown area and instead to go on foot, ride a bike, or take a bus. If you do use your car, there are usually enough parking spaces on the individual campus areas (so long as you get there early enough!), and the larger department stores have parking facilities (with reduced rates if you make a purchase).
