Shopping
|
Giessen's pedestrian zone of Seltersweg and the adjacent area round the Marktplatz, Neustädter Tor, and the "City Center" make up the city's shopping precinct.
Whether you are looking for a department store, a boutique, a specialty shop or a supermarket, here you will be able to find what you want, and you can do all your shopping in peace and quiet – as already indicated, the shopping area is largely closed to traffic and thus reserved for pedestrians. The larger discount marts are all situated on the edge of town and sometimes beyond, but most can be reached by the municipal bus service. Ask your university contact which of these shopping centers are most easily reached from where you live. Opening hours in Giessen are very flexible. Department stores are generally open from 10:00 to 19:00, supermarkets and big discounters from 8:00 to 20:00. On Sundays all shops are closed (except for special occasions during the year). Shopping at any time, day or night, is possible only at gas stations, which offer a fairly wide range of beverages, foodstuffs, magazines and the like. We advise you to avail yourself of this method of shopping only in exceptional situations, as the prices here are much higher than in a supermarket. |
