Content of degree programme

The course of studies is concerned with the general educational sciences, the areas of profession and professional activities in the training and further training of young learners outside the school, as well as "international comparative education" as well as "organizational development and consultation".

The general educational science analyses and reflects on socialization, developmental and educational processes in the social and historical dimension and their systematic importance. It presents basic concepts, theories and methods for the analysis of a variety of pedagogic fields and problem areas.

In the area of further training the main aspects dealt with are the structuring and supporting of adult learning processes. Here the aspect to be taught is the skill of teaching and structuring. On the one hand we are dealing with the structure and formation of the area with the awareness of the problems of the teacher`s tasks involved. On the other hand creating skills in teaching and learning situations as well as in learning processes in the area of micro-didactic, the conceptualization of teaching structures, further training management and evaluation of the content and structure of it are imparted.

The teaching of young learners outside the school involves the pedagogical areas of their family, free time and education. A professional form of pedagogical activity will be developed in this area in dealing with forms of youth culture and young people’s worlds in the contexts of ethnic backgrounds, risk and addiction, intercultural background and migration, violence, delinquency and social disadvantage. Embedded in this area lies a discussion of the theories and approaches of youth research, the history of the period of youth and an international comparison of youth.

Intercultural Comparative education discusses the problems of upbringing and education in multicultural societies.

The module organizational development and consultation deals with basic problems, e.g. communication, decision-making processes, the setting up of networks and power structures.

Classes involving further treatment of the aspects such as research methods, practical phases, expansion of subjects, are offered by other subjects and faculties of the JLU.

Career Options

The professional fields and the fields of activity on which the course of studies is concentrated are wide and varied.

The further learning section involves all parts of adult learning: starting with "training on the job" or the development of leaders in professional or organizational training, further training in computer work or language learning, and also moving into the area of organization of free time and cultural-pedogogical activities. It covers business- privately- and also publicly- financed further training.

Education for the young outside the school involves a variety of organizations doing general area-specific cultural youth work. There is a variety of organizations and businesses active in youth education outside the school. In project work and forms of supervision topics such as interculturality, migration, sex-specific training and social poverty and disadvantaging are dealt with. An interface  between further training and training of young people outside the school is formed by the many initiatives of the job centres to improve the job opportunities, further training and introduction to the job for young people. The commonest forms of pedagogical activity are project work, structuring the learning process, advising, organizational development and planning. Personal relations and relations with the organizations are thus areas of competence with different degrees of importance.
