Content

The Master of Arts degree course in "Inclusive and Elementary Education" is a four semester long, research-oriented one which qualifies its graduates to work in sought-after fields of profession and research. Both the Department of School Education and the Department of Special Needs Education are responsible for this degree programme. Along with the basic area of study, which is obligatory for all students, in the Master`s course a main focus is chosen from the specialisation area. The educational Master course of study builds onto the Giessen Bachelor degree course "Early Childhood Education" (taught in German) but is also matching with other educational Bachelor degree courses. It opens opportunities in the professional area of "education applied to impairment of emotional and social development", "education and rehabilitation applied to people with mental disability", "remedial language education" and "early childhood". The Master`s course also qualifies students for a research-oriented professional career beginning in the form of studies for a doctorate.
The characteristic of this degree course is the "research studies". It allows the connection of practice and theory, of research and appliance as it is required in educational sciences at University as well as in professional areas.

The application period for the winter semester is July, 1st until July, 15th. For further details please see application and entrance requirements for Master degree programmes.

For acceptance into the Master`s course Elementary and Integrative Education it is necessary to have completed the Bachelor`s course in Early Childhood Education (see above) or a Bachelor`s course in educational sciences at another university with a recognized section of the studies dealing with early childhood education, involving no less than 50 cp (credit points) or 32 weekly hours per semester with an additional amount of 14 cp on qualitative and quantitative research methods, of which 8 cp can be acquired retrospectively, parallel to the course.
Above all the following academic qualifications are accepted as equivalent: Diploma and Magister in educational sciences as well as teaching degree programmes including no less than 50 cp respectively 32 weekly hours per semester in Early Childhood Education plus 14 cp in qualitative and quantitative reserach methods, of which 8 cp can be acquired retrospectively, parallel to the course.
The board of examiners can recognize other degree courses after looking at them individually and if applicable, giving an entrance test. Up until this point the studies must include a subject profile containing an element of educational sciences with the above-mentioned noticeable requirement of an equal emphasis on early childhood education.
In all cases a final result of good is required in accordance with § 29 AIIB.

Composition of degree programme

The course offers a wide range of basic aspects and a specialisation area that offers a variety of focus areas. In the basics area students do four modules on central competences in educational science:
  • G1: Module Including Education (8 cp)
  • G2: Module Teaching and Learning in Heterogenous Groups (8 cp)
  • G3: Module Advice (12 cp)
  • G4: Module Empirical Research Methods (8 cp)
  • Practical Training: The chosen tasks  and areas for close observation in the first module of the selected specialisation area should be dealt with.
The chosen specialisation area contains two modules dealing with the chosen focus areas, one module from another focus area, research study and the Master thesis. The following specialisation areas (10 cp) are freely selectable:
  • Focus on education applied to impairment of emotional and social development
  • Focus on education and rehabilitation applied to people with mental disability
  • Focus on remedial language education
  • Focus on Early Childhood
  • FS: The module "Forschendes Studium" (research studies) can be combined with the chosen focus in the specialisation area or a subject of a basic area module and offers a special coordination with practice in individual areas of research (12 cp).
  • TH: The Master thesis (30 CP) is attached through its content and research methodology to the chosen central focus in the specialisation area.
