Content

Household Science is the study of the provision of household services. It considers from a general and interdisciplinary perspective the varied mutual relationships between private households, large households, and other service providers. This includes consideration of social, economic, ecological, political, legal, and technical factors and framework conditions.
Household services serve to ensure and improve quality of life. They are provided by private households and service providers (e.g. daycare facilities for children, canteens, hospitals, nursing homes, household-related service agencies).

The course provides instruction and opportunities for research in the following areas:
  • Economics of Private Households and Family Sciences
  • Management of Personal Household Service Providers
  • Health and Social Policy
  • Home Ecology
  • Process Technology in Service Providers.

Composition of degree programme

The degree course consists of 20 modules:
  • 8 core (compulsory) modules
  • 8 specialisation (elective) modules
  • a written master's thesis (equivalent to 4 modules).
One half of the taught modules are compulsory (core modules), the other half can be selected from the full range of courses offered within the Faculty and partly by other Faculties of JLU Giessen (elective modules). The selection of the elective modules provides an opportunity for specialisation. Students must pass every module in order to successfully complete the course.

The core modules (compulsory modules) are:
  •  Everyday Personal Service Provision within a Network of Institutions and Services
  • Household, Family and Consumer Theories
  • Social Services
  • Process Engineering in Food and Service Enterprises
  • Social Economics of the Provision of Household Services
  • Consume Patterns and Consumer Policy  in Health, Social Services and Nutrition
  • Personal Services and Health Management
  • Corporate Communication
