Subject Area

The cross-faculty Master`s course (MA) Interdisciplinary Studies on Eastern Europe is conducted by the Giessen Center for Eastern European Studies (GiZo). The study plan is composed of social sciences and Eastern Europe related subjects of JLU Gießen. In particular some of the main features are interdisciplinary studies in accordance with the academic profile of the GiZo, internationality and applied research with a view to the region of Eastern Europe.

The course of study takes the students into the research profile of the subjects dealt with in the GiZo and also into the interdisciplinary profile of the centre. It trains them in the areas of research and interdisciplinary studies. With acceptance into this course of study graduates of the subject-related Bachelor courses of study in Slavic studies, History, etc., are given the opportunity to expand their interdisciplinary knowledge of Eastern Europe and to use it in many ways.

The aim of the studies is to develop interdisciplinary Eastern-European related cultural competence as well as comprehensive methodological competences in different acedemic fields. The intention is that students should analyse and evaluate cultural, historical, legal, political and economic processes in Eastern Europe. They should be enabled to independently acquire and implement a critical evaluation of modes and theories. In their studies, the students should develop their intellectual judgement, linguistic verbal and communicative ability as well as working in a team; at the same time they should be taught to analyse complex data independently and creatively, the independent planning, conducting and evaluation of their own projects on Eastern Europe.

Seen as a whole the GiZo Master course is very challenging in comparison with other interdisciplinary Eastern Europe courses of study in Germany:

An early start with interdisciplinary Eastern European studies, already at the beginning of studies
Professional area- and practice-related training through project work and practical courses

Research and teaching covering all regions of Eastern Europe
The connection of Eastern European disciplines and Turkish Studies and the discussion of the question of whether this area belongs to Europe
The long period of study of Eastern Europe from the Middle Ages until the 20th Century
The close cooperation with the Herder-Institut Marburg and the Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture, proposed within the framework of the excellence initiative which offers top MA graduates excellent possibilities for further training and learning.

Entrance requirements

Appropriate Bachelor`s degrees acquired at universities at home or abroad or comparable qualifications fulfil the requirements for admission to the course. In all cases a final grade of "good" or better, in accordance with §29 (AIIB) is required.
Bachelor qualifications are also regarded as an adequate fulfilment of the requirements if the previous studies have imparted skills and knowledge in the selected major Master subject with a volume of 20 cp and in one of the Master ancillary subjects with a volume of 10 cp.
In the major subjects Eastern European History and Slavic studies it is required to have a good knowledge of one of the Eastern European languages taught at present at the JLU: Russian, Polish, Czech, Croatian, Serbian.

Application and admission

This course of study does not have a capacity limit.
Applications must reach the Studierendensekretariat (students office) of JLU Giessen by 15 July.

Composition of degree programme

The structure of the MA course is that of a combined programme of study put together from a major subject and two ancillary subjects. This model offers students freedom in the combination which is to determine the content of the individual academic study profile, so making possible a multi-faceted connection to a profession involved with areas of activity in academic work, in publishing, in journalism, in the media, in cultural and political institutions and in the economy.
In the Master`s course of study a major subject with 50 cp and two ancillary subjects, each with 20 cp can be selected:

The Master thesis should contain two parts of the subject according to the interdisciplinarity of the degree course whereas the main part comes from the major subject. The thesis can also be written solely in the major subject.
