- PhD project: Forced Labour in Global Production – Explaining nation for Reluctant Compliance to the Norm of the Prohibition of Forced Labour.
The prevalence of forced labour is specifically high in the field of economic labour exploitation, with 16 million affected people. Forced labour is a global phenomenon and is found in every region of the world. This constantly high number implies the non-compliance to relevant International Labour Organization (ILO)-instruments by states is widespread and partly severe. The projects poses the question: Why states do not, or only insufficiently, comply with the norm of the prohibition of forced labour. Norm Research in International Relations provides a set of explanations, which have to be examined empirically. This includes document analyses and semi-structured expert interviews to reveal case-specific explanations and causal connections. The project, therefore, provides an explorative and theory-led contribution to the analysis of forced labour as an issue of globalisation.
