Travel information

This page contains directions to/from Giessen from/to three airports in the area.

Frankfurt International Airport

The airport located closest to Giessen is Frankfurt International Airport. This is the recommended and most convenient choice.

How to get to Giessen from Frankfurt International Airport

The journey from the Frankfurt Airport to Giessen (spelt Gießen) takes just over one hour by train. The cheapest single ticket to Gießen costs € 15.50. There are two train stations at Frankfurt Airport, local and long distance. To travel to Gießen you can take a train from either station and change at Frankfurt Main Station ("Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof"). The journey to "Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof" takes 10-15 minutes, the onward journey to Gießen about 45 minutes.

Train stations at Frankfurt Airport

Local railway station ("Regionalbahnhof"), at Terminal 1, Level 1

The local railway station ("Regionalbahnhof") is preferable unless you have to use an Intercity Express (ICE), Intercity (IC) or Eurocity (EC) train to Frankfurt main station and/or for the onward journey to Gießen (note that you will have to pay a supplement for these long distance trains and the journey usually takes just as long or is only marginally quicker).

You can buy your ticket from the green/blue RMV ticket machines (language options: German, English, French, Italian, Spanish, Turkish; they accept € coins and 5, 10, 20, and 50 notes). RMV tickets are not valid on long distance trains (ICE, IC, EC). There are three options:

  1. if you travel on your own: Type "15" (for Gießen) and press "Einzelfahrschein Erwachsene" (= adult single); pay € 15.50.

  2. if you have to start your train ride before 9 am and if you travel in a group of up to 5 persons, a group day ticket ("Gruppentageskarte") may be a good option: Type "15" (for Gießen) and press "Gruppentageskarte" (group day ticket); pay € 44.50.
  3. if you start your train ride after 9 am and if you travel in a group of up to 5 persons, the "Hessenticket" is a good option: Press "Hessenticket"; pay € 35.00.

All tickets are also valid for the bus ride from Gießen train station to your hotel. Tickets 2. and 3. are transferable and can be used by up to 5 persons travelling together for an unlimited number of journeys on the day of issue, e.g. also for taking the bus to and from the workshop warmup in Gießen.

At Frankfurt Main Sation ("Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof"), local trains to Gießen usually depart from track 15 or 16 on the ground level.

 

Long distance railway station ("Fernbahnhof"), right next to Terminal 1

These trains arrive on the ground level of Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof, where all trains to Gießen depart.

How to get to the train stations after arrival at Frankfurt Airport

  1. Arrival at Terminal 1: Follow the signs to "Regionalbahnhof" or "Fernbahnhof".
  2. Arrival at Terminal 2: Terminal 2 is linked to both railway stations via buses and the Sky Line. Follow signs "Bahnhöfe (= train stations) via Sky line”. The free Sky Line and Shuttle Bus services run from 05:00 to 03:00 (5am to 3am).

Tickets and information on rail travel (both local and long-distance)
Regional
The RMV Mobility Center "Below the Airport" provides information and tickets for local transport. It is located at Terminal 1, Level 0, Hall B.

RMV ticket machines
Local transport tickets are also available from ticket machines, situated at the local railway station. Remember that you will need to obtain a ticket before boarding the train.

Long Distance
DB Travel Centers provide travel details and issue tickets. This is where you can buy long-distance rail tickets (also from the RMV ticket machines). One Travel Center is located at the long distance railway station ("Fernbahnhof") and the other directly at the local railway station ("Regionalbahnhof"), Terminal 1, Level 0.

Frankfurt/Hahn Airport

Various low-cost-airlines (e.g. Ryanair) fly to Frankfurt/Hahn Airport, located 180 km from Gießen - the name "Frankfurt"/Hahn is misleading!

How to get to Gießen from Frankfurt/Hahn Airport

A bus service connects the airport with the main train station of Frankfurt (the bus leaves once an hour; the journey takes about 1:45h). The bus stop is directly in front of the airport terminal; the bus ends on the south side of Frankfurt main train station ("Hauptbahnhof"). A single bus ticket currently costs about €15. Once you arrive at the train station, take a train to Gießen (see information on Frankfurt International Airport).

 

Cologne/Bonn Airport ("Köln-Bonn")

Various scheduled as well as low-cost airlines fly to Airport Cologne/Bonn, located 160 km from Gießen.

How to get to Gießen from Cologne/Bonn Airport

The journey from Cologne/Bonn Airport to Giessen takes 2,5 hrs or more (most journeys are about 3 hrs). The train station is located right at the airport, see the pdf map.

From the airport, take the S-13 train (=Rapid Transit Train) to "Köln Hbf" (= Cologne Main Station). From there, take a train to Gießen, either via Troisdorf/Siegen or via Frankfurt (duration of journey: approx. 2:30h).
