Birte Christ teaches American Literature and Cultural Studies at the English Department of JLU. She is research assistant to Prof. Dr. Greta Olson.

Birte has been working at JLU since October 2009 and has previously held positions at the University of Bonn and the University of Freiburg. In 2012 and from 2014 to 2017, Birte has held research fellowships at Amherst College, the American Antiquarian Society in Worcester, MA, and the University of California, Irvine. In the winter semester 2020/21, she serves as stand-in professor of American Literary and Cultural History at Tübingen University. Her teaching and research interests include law and literature, transmedial narratology, women's, gender, and sexuality studies, middlebrow literature and culture, poetry studies, and approaches to teaching American literature and culture.

Birte is the author of Modern Domestic Fiction: Popular Feminism, Mass-Market Magazines, and Middle-Class Culture, 1905-1925 (Winter 2012) and is currently preparing her second book - Imagining the American Death Penalty: Representational and Racial Politics from the Antebellum Era to the Twenty-First Century - for publication. Her edited work includes a special issue of Amerikastudien/American Studies on "Poetry and Law" (2017, with Stefanie Müller; awarded the DGfA Best Article Award 2017), a comparative volume on death penalty literature entitled Death Sentences (Legenda 2019, with Ève Morisi), a special cluster of Narrative on "Paratext and Digital Narrative" (2014, with Dorothee Birke; awarded the James Phelan Prize for Contributions to Narrative 2014), a collection of collaborative essays on the state of the field of American Studies, American Studies / Shifting Gears (Winter 2010; with Michael Butter, Christian Kloeckner and Elisabeth Schäfer-Wünsche), a more "popular" book in German on the impact of 9/11 on American politics and culture, 9/11. Kein Tag, der die Welt veränderte (Schöningh 2011; with Michael Butter and Patrick Keller), and Obama and the Paradigm Shift - Measuring Change (Winter 2012; with Greta Olson). Recent essays have appeared in Amerikastudien, American Literary History, and Post-45.

Birte is working on a monograph entitled Solitary Confinement: A Cultural History of the Present and projects on law and contemporary poetry (with Stefanie Mueller), on the post-war construction of German middlebrow reading culture through American novels in translation, and on a theoretical project on possible futures for intersectionality theory.
