Lab for virtual reality

Often, in psychology experiments, the participants are placed in a very artificial situation. A great disadvantage of such experiments is that the whole perception process is very restricted and artificial, so that the natural cycle between perception and action will be broken. Especially in the area of spatial cognition research this has drastic consequences for the "ecological validity“ and “naturalness“ of the experimental environment. We therefore use a virtual environment for the experiments within the spatial cognition research. In the lab for virtual reality, photorealistic environments can be projected on a large screen and the participants can explore these environments with the help of "Joysticks“. Their whole behaviour in the environment can then be recorded. With this method we can create relatively natural experimental environments without losing the experimental control of the environment.

Experimental psychology lab

In our experimental psychology lab we conduct computer based experiments on different topics within the area of cognitive science. In addition, we have here available computers and software programs for the students, which they need for their first encounter with experimental work they have to do during their study.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging- fMRT

The neuroscientific experiments within the department are partly conducted at the "Bender Institute of Neuroimaging" (B.I.O.N). The B.I.O.N possesses a 1.5 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Tomography (Siemens Magnetom "Symphony") and the institute is located in close proximity of the department building. The scanner is used exclusively for psychological research. The department has available the complete computer equipment and software for the analyses of the experiments based on state-of-the-art technology.
