ZMI’s Events

As a meeting place for scholars, artists, and the public interested in the research concentrations of the ZMI, its spectrum of activities spans conferences and meetings with international participants to workshops, symposia, lectures, festivals, and regular events for students and junior scholars, all the way to film series on select topics. With such a variety of event types, the ZMI has repeatedly explored new avenues for positioning science in the public. To name just one example, the Performing Science Prize, awarded in 2007 and 2011, turned the viewers’ gaze onto the performative dimension of the scientific forms of presenting in which lectures are blended with visually perceptible projections of texts, diagrams, images, and videos. To account for the differences as well as the similarities in scholarly presentations and innovative forms of artistic expression, the prizes were not only awarded for particularly successful scientific presentations, but also for the category "Lecture Performance". In addition, the ZMI hosts the talk show Wissenschaftslounge (Science Lounge). A highlight from the show was the broadcast of the ZDF election show "Wahl im Web" ("Election in the Web") live from the ZMI.

Belonging to the annually recurring section highlights are: the Discourse Festival for Young Performing Arts run by section 5, which puts experimental and innovative concepts into the discourse of performative arts and their structures; the Giessen Geschichts-Lese-Sommer GeLeSo (Giessen History Reading Summer) organized by section 2, in which renowned authors read from their works; and the lecture series Stimmen aus der Praxis (Voices from Practical Experience) run by section 4, in which practitioners from the media and culture sector talk about their career paths , the professional practices, and current challenges within the areas of media and culture.
