Ritualising the Space(s) of Socialism: Yugoslav “Caravans of Brotherhood and Unity”
The project analyses the process of creating the unified national “representational space” in socialist Yugoslavia through the example of specific type of political rituals, the so-called “caravans of brotherhood and unity”. The project will include the analysis of three representative case-studies: Youth Relay Baton, Train of Brotherhood and Unity and pioneer marches. The basic idiosyncrasy of these rituals was that they involved physical mediums (human bodies or physical objects) traversing the country's territory through a carefully routed movement and thus transcending internal ethnic and administrative boundaries, in order to imbue Yugoslav space with specific meanings and temporalise it with ideologised historical narratives. Thus, the abstract space was transformed into web of “places”/topoi, pregnant with culturally informed historical experience. Through caravan routes, the newly conceptualised topoi were connected into ritualised itinerant networks. The dissertation will examine the organisational mechanism of caravans on different administrative levels, the process of routing, diachronic evolution of the official discourse about the rituals, as well as the “sense of place” developed by different groups organizing and participating in the caravans.
