Abstract:

One of the key challenges of the 21th century is the data deluge, in particular due to digitalization. Determining the key features in real-world data sets which allow for classification is of tremendous importance. A typical example is mass spectrometry data of the human proteome with the task to determine disease fingerprints consisting of few proteins for early diagnosis of cancer.

Compressed sensing is a novel research area, which was introduced in 2006, and since then has already become a key concept in various areas of applied mathematics, computer science, and electrical engineering. Its main objective is to allow for highly efficient data acquisition, building on the key idea of sparse representations.

In this talk, we will first provide an overview and introduction into the data world and into compressed sensing. We will then discuss how compressend sensing can be exploited to solve data classification tasks.
