Intensive German Language Course

The program commences with a German language course, which takes place during the summer semester at the Language Centre in Marburg starting at the 1st of June each year. Thereafter, students are placed at the selected University of Giessen or Hohenheim to start the program during the winter semester. The choice of Host University between Giessen or Hohenheim depends on the area of research work and the corresponding supervisory capacity available.

During the German language course students will learn German on a half-day basis in a small group which is ideal for learning. Apart from the language classes this course contains field trips and other activities aiming at introducing the participants to German culture and society.

Compulsory Course Work

You are required to follow and pass 3 modules in the agricultural economics working group at the beginning of the funding period, after the German language course. These modules are:

  • Land Governance for Sustainable Land Use
  • Empirical Research Methods
  • Economics of Rural Institutions

IPPAE Doctoral Seminar

The IPPAE group gathers every week during the teaching periods of the winter and summer semesters to share and discuss research approaches and progress, as well as administrative matters. The seminar aims to support students in the process of their research by other candidates as well as the program coordinator and leader to give a feedback. It is also a means to develop your scientific presentation skills.

Field Work and Data Collection
The program foresees that you will collect empirical primary data for a selected case study in your country of origin.

Data Analysis and Writing
Upon return from the data collection, the candidate has about 1,5 years to conduct three main analyses out of the aquired data. The work should be splitted in three main objectives and worked on one at a time. The candidate should then use the IPPAE seminar to present his/her 3 analyses.

Defense and Publication
In the last months of the scholarship, the candidate will need to bring all his/her work in the form of a book: the PhD thesis, with an introduction, (if necessary one descriptive chapter; if necessary one separate methodology chapter) at least 2 analytical chapters, and one general discussion/conclusion.

Scholarship coverage

The program is mainly financed by scholarships and tutorial support through The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). During the German language course accomodation is provided alongside an allowance of € 410 per month. A monthly scholarship which presently amounts to  € 1.200 is paid for the time of the doctoral studies (38 months).

Overview of funds provided:

  • Study grant during the German class
  • Scholarship for 38 months, the duration of your doctoral studies. Family allowances are provided if your family joins you during the time of your doctoral scholarship allocation.
  • Yearly research grant of 460 Euros to purchase items such as laptops, winter clothes, or cover the costs to participate to courses or conferences
  • One return flight to and from Germany

  • Your flight to and from the data collection location is also covered by the DAAD

  • The publication of your thesis as a book is financed by the DAAD

  • The IPPAE administrates a field work allocation provided by the DAAD for each grant holder. This allocation is of maximum 2500 Euros and is not extendable at all.
