Pathophysiological role of extracellular RNA in ischemia-reperfusion injury and new therapeutic modalities using RNase
It is proposed that extracellular nucleic acids, in particular RNA, derived either from circulating blood cells upon activation, designated "neutrophil extracellular traps" (NET), or from cell damage, exert prothrombotic and hyperpermeability-inducing functions in situations of ischemia/reperfusion. It is the aim of the study to characterize the functions of extracellular nucleic acids in this regard and to establish antagonizing RNase as a feasible therapeutic regimen.
