The Excellence Cluster “Cardio Pulmonary System” (ECCPS) is based on a firmly established and internationally renowned expertise in cardiopulmonary research of the Universities of Giessen and Frankfurt and the Max-Planck-Institute Bad Nauheim.
Within the last years the focus of this “research triangle” has developed in basic research as well as treatment of heart and lung diseases, which in this combination of direct translation of scientific results into better or new therapeutic concepts may well be called unique.
Against the background of heart and lung diseases being the leading causes of death and representing the highest socioeconomic burden of diseases worldwide, the work of the ECCPS assumes social as well as political importance.
The Excellence Cluster Cardio Pulmonary System (ECCPS) of the Justus-Liebig-University Giessen, the Goethe-University Frankfurt and the Max-Planck-Institute for Heart and Lung Research constitutes a translational research centre focusing on vascular and parenchymal diseases of the heart and the lung and on heart-lung-interaction. Working “from bench to bedside” and back the ECCPS also supports the integration of different research disciplines from molecular biology to developmental biology and physiology.
