The blood circulation/vascular system is a unique communication network and supplies oxygen and nutrients along the 100.000 km blood vessels of our body. One major research topic of several laboratories of the life sciences institutes is concerned with the mechanistic understanding of functional aspects of the vascular endothelium in health and disease. Here, specific organ-typical conditions of blood flow and vascular properties in heart and lung add to the complexity of the theme. Former and ongoing graduate programs for young scientists are focussing on cardio-pulmonary topics, related to infectious diseases and new alarming molecules in innate immunity of the lung, to pathogenic mechanisms in the respiratory system and respective new therapies for intervention in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, pulmonary hypertension, or to myocardial infarction and cardiac ischemia-reperfusion injury as well as cardio-protective strategies. Research activities are accompanied by intensive educational programs and seminar series.
