Diplom(M.A.  equivalent) 1969 in Sociology, Statistics and Philosophy of Science at the University of Mannheim. Ph.D. 1977 in Sociology and Philosophy of Science at the University of Mannheim.

Research Associate at the University of Mannheim 1970 – 1972. Lecturer in Sociology and Social Research at the University of Hamburg 1972 – 1979.

Project Director at ZUMA(now GESIS Mannheim) for the first general social survey(ALLBUS) in Germany 1979 - 1981. Professor for empirical research and methodology at the University of Giessen 1981 – 1993 and 2000 – 2008.

 Program Director for societal Monitoring at GESIS Mannheim 1994 - 2000. Since 2008 Professor emeritus at the University of Giessen.
