Shareable Courseware Object Reference Model Initiative (SCORM)

SCORM-Homepage

"XML-based specifications supporting learning technologies have been developed by the Shareable Courseware Object Reference Model Initiative (SCORM) and distributed through the Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative Network. Chapter 5 of the current SCORM specification presents the Course Structure Format. CSF is 'an Extensible Markup Language (XML)-based representation of a course structure that can be used to define all of the course elements, structure, and external references necessary to move a course from one LMS (Learning Management System) environment to another...'"

Learning Material Markup Language (LMML)

deutschsprachige Einführung

Meta-Modeling for Web-Based Teachware Management

Tutorial Markup/Modelling Language (TML) "Tutorial Markup Language (TML) an interchange format designed to separate the semantic content of a question from its screen layout or formatting. The language is designed to support several different types of question within the same content model. TML 4.0 is essentially a super-set of HTML, with new elements added to describe question information."

Multimedia Courseware for
Computer Science Education
"This project, sponsored by NSF, is focused on building and evaluating multimedia courseware for computer science classes, in particular, the different computer graphics classes. The project has three main components: Developing courseware that goes beyond the simple text and pictures multimedia so often found (i.e., has some sound pedagogical principles behind it and involves interactivity); Developing authoring tools that facilitate the building of pedagogically sound material; Evaluating the authoring tools and the courseware for their effectivenes"

The Vicarious Learner: Computers in Teaching and Learning Course "These projects" (

"aimed to examine the role of dialogue in learning and how it can be maintained in this age of decreasing resources in education and expanding use of distance learning environments. We postulated the existence of a phenomenon called vicarious learning which proposed that exposure to peers' learning experiences can have an educational benefit. While many projects are looking at the use of dialogues in education, we took a somewhat different approach. We looked at the possibility of capturing particularly interesting learning dialogues and "recycling" them as a new type of resource for subsequent learners."

The Development of Interactive World Wide Web Courseware for Students of Engineering and Technology "Providing students with access to a book does not imply that students will learn. Learning occurs when the book is given context within a wider educational framework. To this Biggs and Moore (1994) suggest that 'deep' learning involves both: communication between learners and teachers, and, learners being engaged in interactive learning processes. By similar analogy the provision of written and visual information in electronic format on the WWW is not by itself an effective teaching and learning tool. This paper describes the design and development of a prototype version of an interactive, on-line WWW package. The package is intended to allow learners to follow a self paced learning program in conjunction with other (traditional and non-traditional resources) distributed by the University." Beispielsystem
Computational Science Education Project "CSEP is an electronic book for teaching Computational Science and Engineering. The intended audience are students in science and engineering at the advanced undergraduate level and higher. Tutorials for freely available networking and visualization software are included and have attracted a range of users, including high-school students and people from the commercial sector." Using an Education Server Software System
to Deliver Special Education Coursework
via the World Wide Web

"The World Wide Web (Web) has considerable potential for delivering distance education programs. New computer software programs are being developed to facilitate the management of instruction and communication among students and instructors who are involved with the delivery of Web-based coursework. One such program is the TopClass educational server software system.

This investigation examined the effect of using the TopClass system to deliver several units of instruction in a special education course that was delivered via the Web. Procedures for setting up and implementing the education server system were explored, as were student reactions and the impact of the system on student learning."

Open-Source-Tools

THE CASTLE TOOLKIT
(COMPUTER ASSISTED TEACHING and LEARNING)

"The CASTLE toolkit has been developed so that Tutors and Course managers can create on-line interactive multiple choice questions (MCQs) quickly and easily without any prior knowledge of HTML, cgi, or similar scripting languages."
