International Information Management of JLU Giessen

Technical Background:

  • Webpages are major communication tool of JLU's International Office
  • At JLU: Plone/ZOPE as Content Management System (CMS)
  • ZOPE/Plone uses an object-oriented database and belongs to the most powerful and safe CMS currently available
  • ZOPE/Plone is Open Source (free download), used by many universities and public institutions worldwide: University of Washington, Oxford University, University of Bristol, University of Ghent, University of Sevilla, more than 10 German universities, the Brasilian Government, NASA etc.
  • Drawback: Highly complicated backend, difficult load distribution, written in the rarely used programming languages Python, TAL and METAL
  • Advantage: Backend administrated by JLU's Computing Centre for the entire university. Highly flexible, dynamic system with Web 2.0 features while complying with the highest standards for web accessibility. 6 Million requests per week, more than 1000 editors, and over 2.250.000 objects in one database. Customisation of JLU's Corporate Design (CSS-changes) possible for all webpages of JLU.
  • International Information Management and JLU's Web-Administration one person: technical aspects and content united (ususal problem: webmaster has the technical know-how but no content, editors have contents but no technical know-how)
  • Technical features of international pages: no cryptic URLs: better results in Google, easy to remember

  • Switching from German to English pages necessary only once: all pages available in the respective language are shown, and those only. You stay in your selected language mode.
