Internationalization is at the heart of successful research and teaching. However, dealing with different cultures is also challenging and entails many pitfalls. The International Office of JLU Giessen therefore offers the workshop “Intercultural Training” which is tailor-made for international doctoral candidates and based on theories and methods of the training for international competencies by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

It is recommended for doctoral students who have just arrived in a new culture and want to improve their intercultural awareness. Germans are also invited and encouraged to attend and will receive advice on working in an intercultural environment. Participants will be introduced to different cultural aspects and how to interact with others in your international lab and everyday life.

Trainer: Stefanie Rübbert is a trainer for Intercultural Competence and works with different cultural teams to help them attain skills, knowledge and experience allowing them to deal with intercultural differences. Ms. Rübbert uses visualizations and editing in the group to improve the conscious discussion and the learning of action strategies in an intercultural context.

Aim: The aim of this workshop is to raise awareness of other cultures, preparing for a stay abroad and cooperation with foreign colleagues or making your stay in Germany easier.

Content:

  • Intercultural sensitisation of perception / behaviour
  • Change of perspective in the intercultural context
  •  Intercultural communication in the field

in practical exercises and simulations with other participants.
