Arrival / Departure

July 17 is the official arrival day, August 14 the official departure day. If you want to arrive earlier or depart later, you may contact the ISU office on housing possibilities. In some instances it might be possible to stay in the room in the student hall of residence (additional fee incurs). If not, the organisation office can furnish you with contact details of youth hostels and hotels and can assist you with booking.

ISU Giessen will entertain a stall at Giessen train station on Saturday, July 18, 2009. Please contact us there. You will be furnished with information and your room key and will then be taken by mini-bus to your room.

Travel Information

Arrival by plane:
The airport located closest to Giessen is Frankfurt International Airport.

  • Upon arrival, pick up your luggage.
    Upon arrival at Frankfurt Airport, follow the signs to the baggage claim. If you have arrived on an international flight, you will have to pass through passport control on your way to the baggage claim area. Upon arrival in the baggage claim area, check the information boards for the baggage carousel number of your flight.
  • Arrival at Terminal 1: Follow the signs to "Regionalbahnhof" = Local Railway Station.
    Arrival at Terminal 2: Follow signs "Bahnhöfe via Sky line" = train station via Sky Line. The free of charge Sky Line service runs from 05:00 am to 03:00 am.
  • Purchase a train ticket to Giessen in the "DB Reisezentrum" = DB Travel Center", which is located in Terminal 1, Level 0, Hall B. The cheapest ticket (by "RE"-train) to Giessen currently costs 11,90 Euro.
    Please note: some plane tickets include free-of-charge travel by train to your final destination in Germany (Rail & Fly). For details on "Rail & Fly", please ask your travel agent or visit the information pages of Frankfurt Airport or Deutsche Bahn. However, please11/26/2009 valid ticket as fare dodgers will be fined.
  • Take a "S-Bahn" = Rapid Transit Train to "Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof" = Frankfurt Main Station. The journey takes about 10 minutes.
  • You can either get on a S 8-train heading to Hanau Main Station or a S 9-train heading to Offenbach Ost; in both cases, please get off the "S-Bahn"-train at "Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof" = Frankfurt Main Station.
  • After getting off the "S-Bahn" at "Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof" = Frankfurt Main Station, go up to the ground level and take a train to Giessen. The journey from Frankfurt to Giessen takes about 45 minutes. Trains leave approximately every 30 minutes; the first train leaves at 05:22 am, the last one at 00:27 am - please plan your journey accordingly.   • Get off your train at Giessen.


Various low-cost-airlines fly to the airport Frankfurt-Hahn. A bus-service connects the airport with the main train station of Frankfurt (the bus leaves once an hour; the journey takes about 1:45h). The bus stop is directly in front of the airport terminal; the bus ends on the south side of the train station. The bus ticket currently costs about 12 Euro. Please consult the homepage of Frankfurt-Hahn Airport for details. Once you arrive at the train station, take a train to Giessen (confer above).


More and more airlines also fly to the airport Cologne / Bonn. From the airport, take a train to Giessen, either via Troisdorf or via Frankfurt. For further information please consult the homepage of the Deutsche Bahn.


Arrival by train

Giessen is attached to the following train tracks:

  • Northwest / Southeast: Cologne - Hagen - Giessen - Frankfurt
  • West - East: Koblenz - Limburg - Giessen - Fulda
  • Northeast: Frankfurt - Giessen - Marburg - Kassel


Arrival by bus

Various bus lines link European cities with Giessen (the bus stop is in front of the train station) or Frankfurt.

      Exit Reiskirchener Dreieck, connection via A480 (ca. 12 kilometer)
      Exit Fernwald, connection via B457 (ca. 10 kilometer)
      Exit Gambacher Kreuz (ca. 20 kilometer), via A45 to Gießener Südkreuz (ca. 10 kilometer), connection via A485
    • A45 Dortmund - Hanau / Würzburg
      Exit Wetzlar-Ost, connection via B49 (ca. 15 kilometer)
      Exit Gießener Südkreuz, connection via A485 (ca. 10 kilometer)
      Exit Gambacher Kreuz (ca. 20 kilometer), via A45 to Gießener Südkreuz (ca. 10 kilometer), connection via A485
  • "Giessener Ring"
    Giessen is surrounded by a ring-road, made up from the following highways: the A480 (in the north), the A485 (in the east), B429 (in the west) and the B49 (in the south). You can easily reach an destination in the city by taking one of the various exists of the ring-road.
