| Effects of grazing intensity on net primary production and nutrient dynamics

| In order to investigate the relationship between productivity of Leymus chinensis steppe under varying grazing intensities, the net primary productivity of five grassland management systems is estimated. Abundance of grassland species, leaf, stem, and root biomass, root length density (soil auger) and newly formed roots (ingrowth cores) are determined at several sampling dates. Two ungrazed sites (ungrazed since 1977 and 1999) are compared with two moderately grazed sites (winter grazing, hay making and summer grazing) and one heavily grazed site. Soil nutrient dynamics are investigated by resign capsules, plant nutrient uptake by analysis of the mineral nutrient content of plant organs and nutrient turnover by decomposition of shoot and root biomass
in litter bags. Low fertilizer application and moderate water application at the early growth stage are tested as simple management practices in order to increase productivity. The project is supplemented by investigations about the effect of aspect on productivity of grasslands in hilly landscapes and putative contribution of legumes on the nitrogen budget of this steppe ecosystem |
