|Professor Peter Kämpfer became Professor of Microbiology of Recycling Processes at the University of Giessen in 1995. He initially studied biology at the University of Bonn before embarking on postgraduate studies in Technical Environmental Protection at the Technical University of Berlin. He has doctorated in both subjects and received the titles of Dr. rer. nat. and Dr.-Ing. After completion of his habilitation [opus magnum] at TU Berlin in 1993, he became a senior researcher at the Department of Hygiene and Environmental Medicine at RWTH Aachen University before taking up his professorship at Giessen.
Professor Kämpfer’s research focuses on the description of new bacterial species and genera and on microbial diversity studies on different habitats such as sewage treatment plants and biogas plants. Since 2008 he has been chairman of the Committee of Biological Agents and also of the panel of experts for “Classification of Biological Agents” at the German Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs.
Not only as the Dean of Faculty 09 – Agricultural Sciences, Nutritional Sciences, and Environmental Management has he been involved in university committee work. Previously, he was Dean of Studies and a member of the Senate Commission “Modularisation and multi-stage study programmes” among other duties.
