II. Types of classes and assessment

  • Proof of Academic Achievement:

Within the German University system attendance is confirmed by certificates (so called Scheine). These records of achievement consist firstly of  “attendance certificates” (Teilnahmescheine) and secondly of  “performance certificates” (qualifizierte Scheine). The former usually entail active and regular participation and often an in-class presentation. The latter usually require the above plus in-class presentation and an extensive seminar paper.

  • Duration of seminars and lectures:

There are different types of classes (see below). Normally, they last two hours per week for the period of one semester (= 2 SemesterWochenStunden=2 SWS).

  • Types of classes:

Lecture (Vorlesung):
Lectures present scientific basics, special topics of different fields like history, theology, Muslim civilisation and area studies are picked out as well as the newest results of research and questions of methodology. Lectures are open to students of all semesters and the number of participants is not limited. Normally, there is no examination in lectures. ECTS – students may agree with the lecturer that there will be an oral examination (15 minutes) at the end of the semester.

Seminar (Seminar):
Discussion of complex questions and scientific knowledge, application of scientific methods to special problems. Lecture and discussion alternate in this course.

  • BASIC SEMINAR (Proseminar): introduces into the methodology of the scientific field of activity. Basic seminars are compulsory in the study period "Basic Studies".
  • ADVANCED SEMINAR (Hauptseminar): builds upon the basic knowledge of the scientific field of activity acquired during the "Basic Studies". Advanced seminars are compulsory in the study period "Advanced Studies".

Exercise course (Übung):
Course consisting of exercises to the curriculum of a lecture and/or to the methodology of a discipline. Exercise courses vary in subject matter. They can comprise, for example, language and literature courses as well as specific fields of research. Normally, there is a written test at the end of each semester.

Colloquium:
A course which provides the opportunity for academic dialogue. These courses are aimed at highly advanced students preparing for their final examinations or the doctoral degree (for example: Diplomanden-, Examens- und Doktorandenkolloquien).
ECTS – students may agree with the teacher that there will be an oral examination (15 minutes) at the end of the semester.

Introduction/Preparatory Instruction (Einführung / Propädeutikum):
Representation and transmission of scientific basics and introduction to procedures, methodologies and working with sources and references. The course gives an introduction into the basic knowledge of a discipline, organized as a combination of lectures and exercises (Vorlesung + Übung). Normally, there is a written test in this course at the end of the semester.

III. Brief information on the Master of Arts in "Islamic studies"

Course contents:
"Islamic studies" is defined as the study of history and culture of the Islamic world from its beginning in the 7th century up to the present, on the basis of the three most important written languages of the area: Arabic, Persian and Turkish.

Main areas:
The course in "Islamic studies" ensures continuous language instruction in Arabic, Persian and Turkish. It focuses on the following fields of interest: Islamic theology, history and literature, politics, social teachings, material culture and historical area studies. The historical frame covers the early period of Islam, the Islamic Middle Ages and the present. The regional fields of interest are the Central and Eastern Arabian countries, Turkey, Iran and Afghanistan. Main emphasis is put on the study of written sources but basic knowledge of contemporary issues is also demanded.

Prerequisites for study and language requirements:
The student is expected to possess the patience and endurance to learn three non–European languages not related to each other in their structures as well as good (mainly reading) skills in at least two European languages. (For different requirements for students of "Islamic studies" as major or minor subject please refer to the general study prescriptions.) The course of study is very labour–intensive. Practical advice is given within the general student advisory service at the beginning of each semester by Prof. Dr. Angelika Hartmann and throughout the semester during regular visiting hours by Prof. Dr. Angelika Hartmann, Hassan Wassouf, M.A. and Henner Kirchner, M.A. (see program of lectures). Students should seek the advice of the institute’s representatives. Throughout the course of study as well as in the very beginning, personal consultation of the teaching staff is advised.

Length of study and degrees:
The period of study is a minimum of eight semesters. After eight semesters the Master’s exam and thesis (Magister Artium)  can be taken. In special cases a Master’s degree can be followed by PhD studies (see general study prescriptions).

Combination of subjects:
Different possibilities to combine subjects are described in the general study prescriptions.
"Islamic studies" concentrate on the development of Islamic culture and societies, in the past and present, by means of philological, historical as well as sociological methods of approach. This includes the necessity to work with methodologies provided by disciplines like "social sciences", "(comparative) literary studies", "political science" etc. Therefore, it is advisable to take up studies in a minor subject which is based on methodologies like the before–mentioned.

Learning objective:
The student is expected to acquire the ability to deal with questions in "Islamic studies" using scientific methods and to gain the necessary language skills and general knowledge in the fields of interest on which "Islamic studies" concentrate. Students who study "Islamic studies" as a major subject should be able to gain fluency in at least one oriental language and should be able to undertake research in it. Students with "Islamic studies" as a major subject should also achieve reading fluency in a second oriental language and should be able to prove basic knowledge in a third. Simplified requirements apply to students taking "Islamic studies" as a minor subject (see general study prescriptions).

Career perspectives:
There is neither one particular career nor a set career path. The growing interest in the Islamic world opens new career opportunities for Arabists and students of "Islamic studies" who have chosen suitable subject combinations. Prospective areas of work include: economics, the media, the diplomatic service, international organizations, language services, documentation, librarianship, cultural institutes abroad, academic institutions outside the university and, to a limited extent, the university itself. In general, it can be said that only students with better than average academic degrees may succeed in professional life. Information about career perspectives and traineeships is provided by special leaflets edited by the Institute of Oriental Studies with the aim to give assistance to students who want to plan their career prospects or to find a place for traineeships in private or public institutions.

IV. Grading System

In general, the grades a student receives at Giessen are not considered in the final examination grade, but certifications ("Scheine") are necessary for the admission to the intermediate examination and the final examination. It is even possible to receive certificates without any grade marked on them. This absence of grade is not an indication of the student’s performance. ECTS - students will receive grades for each course taken in order to obtain a transcript of records.

The following grading scale applies:

1 = "sehr gut"
(very good; an excellent achievement, which completely meets the requirements)
ECTS grading scale: A

2 = "gut"
(good - satisfactory; an achievment, which is considerably above average requirements)
ECTS grading scale: B

2-3 = "gut - befriedigend"
(good - satisfactory; an achievement, which is somewhat above average requirements)
ECTS grading scale: C

3 = "befriedigend"
(satisfactory; an achievement, which meets average  requirements)
ECTS grading scale: D

4 = "ausreichend"
(sufficient; an achievement, which despite its flaws satisfies requirements)
ECTS grading scale: E

5 = "nicht ausreichend" ("mangelhaft")
(not sufficient; an achievement, which due to considerable flaws does not meet requirements)
ECTS grading scale: FX, F

In Germany, the symbols "+" and "-" are used to describe the tendency of the performance toward a better or worse grade. (This cannot be respected by the conversion to the ECTS grading scale; exception: "2+" and "4-"). Only grades "1" to "4" are pass marks.
