CRC/Transregio 79 - Materials for Tissue Regeneration in Systemically Diseased Bones
Duration: 2010 - 2018
Univ.-Prof. Dr. Christian Heiss
Department of Trauma Surgery, University Hospital of Giessen
The German Research Foundation (DFG) has decided to continue funding the three universities of Giessen, Dresden, and Heidelberg with their Collaborative Research Center/Transregional 79, titled "Materials for Tissue Regeneration in Systemically Diseased Bones." The German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg and two Leibniz Institutes, Solid State & Materials Research and Polymer Research, both in Dresden, are also participating. JLU is spearheading the center (speaker: Univ.-Prof. Heiss, Acting Director & Head Surgeon of the Experimental Trauma Laboratory, Justus Liebig University (JLU) Giessen, Germany).
The goal of this interdisciplinary research network is to develop new synthetic replacement materials for bones and implants, and to analyze and test them. At the heart of this research are two diseases that significantly increase the risk of broken bones: osteoporosis, a widespread degenerative bone disease that occurs primarily in old age, and multiple myeloma, a type of malignant tumor that leads to locally enclosed destruction of bone tissue.
Although many synthetic materials for both bone replacement and permanent implants are available for modern trauma surgery and orthopedics, these are not suitable for the specific requirements of systemic disease patterns and often lead to considerably worse bone fractures and only partial recovery. Therefore, the task of this research network will be to develop novel solutions to such bone defects and investigate them in suitable cell culture and animal models. At the end of the twelve-year project, the results will hopefully find application in clinical practice.
Professors Heiss, Alt, and Lips, and other researchers in the Department of Trauma Surgery & Experimental Trauma Laboratory are carrying out important subprojects of CRC/TRR 79. Professor Wenisch of the Department of Veterinary Anatomy, Histology, and Embryology at JLU Giessen, Professor Janek of the Department of Physical Chemistry at JLU, and Dr. Kampschulte in the Experimental Radiology Section of the Center for Radiology, University Hospital of Giessen and Marburg GmbH (Giessen campus), are leading other subprojects.
After an official assessment in December 2013, where the results from the initial funding period and applications for additional funding of the research network were presented, CRC/TRR 79 received an excellent rating, and the DFG agreed to finance a second funding period (July 2014 to June 2018) with 9.9 million Euros.
