In the context of the federal and state Excellence Initiative, which equally aims to strengthen top-level research and increase the quality of German universities and research organizations, improve its international competitiveness, and make excellence visible in university and research areas, Justus Liebig University Giessen achieved outstanding results in both funding periods. Two programs have been funded since 2006:
- In the funding area 'Graduate Schools', the GCSC - International Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture
- In the funding area 'Excellence Cluster', the ECCPS - Excellence Cluster Cardio-pulmonary System
JLU's success in the Excellence Initiative not only distinguishes the work of both institutions, but also decidedly contributes to the strategic profile development that JLU is resolutely pursuing in the humanities and life sciences. The areas of excellence have an important pacesetting function when it comes to expanding the university as a whole or individual areas that show potential.
