Vice President for Academic Infrastructure

Since April 2021, Prof. Dr. Alexander Goesmann has strategic responsibility for the resources required in today’s academic life for teaching and research.

His portfolio covers the large service facilities at JLU such as the IT Service Centre and the University Library alongside subject-specific infrastructures like scientific laboratories, greenhouses, the Academic Sports Service and animal husbandry.

Prof. Goesmann, born in 1974, has held the professorship for systems biology at JLU since 2013 with a focus on genomics, proteomics and transcriptomics. He studied natural science informatics in Bielefeld. Until his appointment to Giessen, he headed the Bioinformatics Resource Facility at the Centre for Biotechnology (CeBiTec) at Bielefeld University. In 2007 he also took over an independent junior research group for "Computational Genomics".

In his research, Prof. Goesmann deals with the management and analysis of huge amounts of data produced when sequencing DNA in genome projects. New software solutions for automated and rapid data analysis as well as systematic data storage are the focus here. In 2015, the establishment of the German Network for Bioinformatics Infrastructure (de.NBI) began, in which Goesmann played a major role. Since then, JLU has been one of six locations in Germany where a future-oriented computing infrastructure has been established.
