The progress of the project "Origin and fate of vascular myofibroblasts and smooth muscle cells during pulmonary vascular remodeling and reverse remodeling" will be presented by Dr. Elie El-Agha.

Project outline:

An increase in the degree of muscularization of pulmonary arterial vessels is a key finding in pulmonary hypertension. The progenitor cells and the origin of pulmonary arterial smooth muscle cells (PASMC), which increase during pulmonary vascular remodeling, as well as the mechanisms of fate of PASMC under conditions of reversal of vascular remodeling are largely elusive. Against this background the project will decipher the origin of PASMC and the mechanisms of their accumulation by tracing experiments with genetically modified mice in hypoxia- and tobacco-smoke induced PH. In a second step processes of PASMC-fate during reversal of PH are aimed to be identified.
