EVERYTHING YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO READ, BUT NEVER DARED TO TOUCH…OR, AWAY WITH THE SHELF OF SHAME!

A good old-fashioned Reading Club in which the “classics” are discussed in an informal setting – that’s the idea behind our new project. The Reading Club was inspired by three observations: one, there are way too many canonical literary works that we haven’t read – but probably should; two, it might be more fun to engage with these texts when you actually get the chance to discuss your reading experience afterwards; three, despite our passion for visual media, it is sometimes nice to return to the written word.

If you share one or more of these sentiments, then please join us for our first meeting on Wed, Nov. 1st at 6 pm in room B340. We start off discussing Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884; any edition) – and will decide on readings for future meetings. This first session on November 1 will prepare us, too, for Reconstruction specialist Brook Thomas’ talk on November 7, at 6 pm in room B9, on “Re-visiting the Relation between History and Literature: ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN and Reconstruction.”

We are going to meet once a month. Drop in for just one meeting, or two, or all! If you have any questions, feel free to contact us at maren.walinski@anglistik.uni-giessen.de.

We’re looking forward to seeing you and until then, have fun reading!
