Workshop on the Economics of Fixed Book Price Systems (14.11. - 15.11.2019)

The goal of the workshop is an economic assessment of the book market. The topics to be discussed include book quality and variety, the industry structure in general and the substitutability between the online and offline sales channel from the viewpoint of the consumers. A special emphasis will be placed on the analysis of fixed book price systems, which can generally be seen as a form of Resale Price Maintenance (RPM). There is no general consensus among competition economists regarding the efficiency effects of RPM. The resulting uncertainty about the legal treatment of RPM in the book market is exacerbated by the fact that books can be characterized as horizontally and vertically differentiated experience goods.

To discuss all these topics, the workshop brings together researchers, competition experts and practitioners.

Speakers and Panelists

Joel Waldfogel (University of Minnesota), Christos Genakos (University of Cambridge), Paul Crosby (Macquarie University Sydney), Achim Wambach (Monopolies Commission, ZEW). Further participants will be announced shortly.

We are happy to provide additional information on request. Please feel free to us.
