Center for international Development and Environmental Research (ZEU)

The ZEU, founded in 1997, is an interdisciplinary research institution of the Justus-Liebig-University (JLU) focussing on developmental co-operation and environmental research. Currently the following disciplines are involved: Agriculture and Food, Geography, Environmental Protection, Law, Political Science and Economics.
The ZEU carries out interdisciplinary research and activities related to elementary development and environmental questions. It publishes the working results at reports and papers.
The ZEU functions as a contact and procurement venue. It owns a specialised library as well as data bases and information systems.
The ZEU organises symposia and presentations and the awarding of the JLU developing countries prize.
The activities of the ZEU are focused on the topics of environment and development. This fact owes to the idea that environmental and developmental problems are usually interdependent, and should therefore be examined through faculty transcending research.
Each section is directed by two professors of different disciplines. Together with representatives of research fellows and a managing director the directors form the executive committee. It is supported by an advisory board associating representatives of German development organisations and business.
Developmental as well as environmental research is conducted by various institutes of the JLU which perform their work in many different countries and, partly, in international comparative studies in one or even both topics. A major task of the ZEU is to use this potential effectively and to fill a gap in the market of international research with the comparative advantages arising through the Center's activities. Therefore a regional specialisation of the activities of the ZEU is not intended.
The ZEU is open to all scientists and working groups of the JLU intending to carry out multidisciplinary research projects. Furthermore, a broad co-operation with other universities and research institutions in Germany and worldwide is welcome and essential.
