President

Prof. Dr. Joybrato Mukherjee has been President of JLU since 16 December 2009.

Prof. Dr. Joybrato Mukherjee has been President of Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) since 16 December 2009. The Professor of English Linguistics belonged to the Executive Board of JLU as early as the beginning of 2008 as First Vice-President with the portfolio for Learning and Teaching. After having served as Vice-President of the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) since 2012, he has taken office as President of the DAAD on 1 January 2020.

Professor Mukherjee (born in 1973) studied English, Biology and Education at RWTH Aachen University. After graduating in 1997 with a teaching degree (First State Examination) and an M.A. degree, he took the Second State Examination in 1999 after completing his two-year post-graduate training for teaching at high-school level. He then worked as a Research Assistant at the English Seminar, University of Bonn, and received his doctorate there in 2000. His habilitation was completed at the University of Bonn in 2003 and he received the authorisation to teach at university level, the venia legendi, for English Philology.

Professor Mukherjee was appointed Full Professor of English Linguistics in Summer Semester 2003. Despite several offers of appointment from universities including Zurich (Switzerland) and Salzburg (Austria), he remained at JLU.

In Romania in October 2012, Professor Mukherjee was conferred with an honorary doctorate of the Ion Ionescu de la Brad University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine (USAMV) of Iasi for his academic services and contribution to the strengthening of ties between USAMV and JLU. In Georgia in March 2018, he received the honorary doctorate of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU), Tiflis, for his contribution to active cooperation and internationalisation.

Professor Mukherjee’s research interests are computer-based corpus linguistics, applied linguistics, English syntax and varieties of English. Many stays abroad for research and teaching purposes have led him to a variety of universities throughout the world.
