How do structures of interaction and participation change through digital media? Which cultural influences do digitalisation and social media have on the way we research, read, and write? How do we learn, study, and process knowledge? In which ways do our understandings and views on the world change if automation and algorithms intensively define what we see, both online and beyond? The ZMI, as an interdisciplinary research centre of the JLU, investigates how society deals with such transformation processes.

Media and Interactivity - Research at the ZMI

Media and interactivity  Research at the ZMI

The research of the centre is oriented to media-related transformations and breakthroughs of how digital formats have established themselves and influenced nearly all aspects of life. Digitalisation implies the automation, expedition, interconnectedness, and algorithmisation of everyday life. Digitalisation brings new hybrid forms of reading, writing, and communication, both in speech and writing. Meanwhile our understanding of interaction, interactivity, cooperation, and collaboration, as well as our perspective on information, knowledge, and education, changes. As a result, new views develop on politics, participation, public life, society, stakeholders, education, identity, habitus, and gender.

Living Interdisciplinarity

Living Interdisciplinarity

The Centre for Media and Interactivity's strength lies in its interdisciplinary focus and the intersection of topics, projects, and research endeavours: language, literary, and cultural studies; political, historical, and social sciences; fine arts; and gender studies are involved in investigating questions of media and social change.

As a research centre of the Justus Liebig University Giessen, the ZMI initiates and conducts externally-funded research projects. Furthermore, the ZMI organizes the research focus "Literacy and Education in Media Society," which engages with changing concepts of knowledge and education.
