Short Bio

Prof. Jürg Luterbacher, PhD, was Chair for Climatology, Climate Dynamics and Climate Change and member of the Centre of International Development and Environmental Research (ZEU) at the University of Giessen and former Director of the Department of Geography. He is now Director Science and Innovation at the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in Geneva.

Jürg Luterbacher studied physical Geography, botany, chemistry and geology at the University of Bern, Switzerland. He was awarded a PhD in Climate Science from by the Faculty of Science, University of Bern. His research is devoted towards a better understanding of past, present and future hydrological changes and temperature variations in Eurasia, the Arctic and Asia and the role of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

With his interdisciplinary approaches, he also studies the effects and influences of solar changes, tropical eruptions, land use changes and anthropogenic climate change on societies and their capacities to cope with extreme climate conditions. Another focus deals with novel statistical methods to downscale future extremes to local scales with potential applications for stakeholders and provide climate services for different users.

He was a lead author in the IPCC 5th assessment report chapter 5 “Information from Paleoclimate Archives”. Together with Prof. Bendix from the University of Marburg, he has published a book for Bachelor students on “Klimatologie”. He served as an editor for various meteorology and climatology journals. He has more than 200 peer-reviewed publications, including Science and Nature.

Professor Luterbacher received the Senior Visiting Scientist Award of the Chinese Academy of Science and the Scientific Research Expert of the Academy of Athens as well as the Medal for outstanding scientific contribution in teaching from the University of Brno, Czech Republic.
