As the youngest location of Islamic centres in Germany, the chair of Islamic Theology and its didactics trains primary school teachers in the subject Islamic religious education. It represents the concept of a contemporary Islamic religious education, which focuses not on the traditional mediation of religious content, but the religious maturity of the individual.

The Islamic theological content is considered in its respective context to translate it into the reality of life in contemporary society. Interculturality and religiosity, as well as plurality and interdisciplinarity, belong to the research profile of the professorship.

The programme imparts the required scientific and didactic basics and competencies for teaching. Central contents include the main sources of Islam, religious practice, as well as Islamic religious education and subject didactics. The curriculum is enhanced through various workshops in Islamic aesthetics (such as calligraphy).

Since March 2013, the JLU, in cooperation with the Hessian Ministry of Education, has been offering a one-year postgraduate programme for teachers of Muslim faith who are already in the teaching profession.
