Introducing “Hybrid Teaching” for Graduates of Cultural Studies
During the so-called "Corona semesters" and the period of Emergency Remote Teaching, lecturers delivered all their classes in a virtual mode. Returning to face-to-face teaching, some academic sessions offer participants the option of being present on site or attending online. Such courses fall under the umbrella term of “blended synchronous teaching”, commonly known as “hybrid teaching”. According to Gabi Reinmann, this is a concept based on simultaneous face-to-face and online teaching (cf. Reinmann, 2021). In view of the current benefits of hybrid teaching for learning outcomes and academic achievement, NIDIT in cooperation with the GCSC is pleased to conduct the workshop: Introducing “hybrid teaching” for graduates of Cultural Studies.
Considering that research assistants and doctoral students in Cultural Studies teach or will teach in different departments of universities, this workshop is intended to familiarize doctoral students with hybrid teaching formats that are gaining momentum internationally. The main goal is to introduce technical and didactic challenges that hybrid teaching may bring. Accordingly, this practical workshop consists of two sections. On the one hand, we will discuss different possibilities of this teaching format as well as practical strategies that are helpful when adapting traditional teaching methods into this new format. On the other hand, participants will have the opportunity to implement what they have learnt by not only directly testing the equipment and technology for hybrid teaching formats, but also by designing a short teaching sample and voluntarily presenting it.
This three-hour workshop will be held in a hybrid format, i.e. participants have the chance to attend the session face-to-face or virtually (via BBB). Online participants will be able to follow the hardware instructions by looking at media materials produced for this workshop.

Learning goals
  • Know what the term “hybrid teaching” means and its basics;
  • Recognise the potentials of using synchronous hybrid teaching for their own teaching sessions;
  • Be familiar with possible challenges and difficulties hybrid teaching entails;
  • Know the requirements related to specific software and hardware, and observe them in their own teaching practice;
  • Apply strategies that are helpful for effective teaching in the synchronous hybrid format;
  • Feel confident in teaching through hybrid formats.

The workshop is aimed at GCSC and GGK doctoral students. If there is further capacity, participants from other institutions are also invited to sign up. In this case, please contact us by email: teaching.centre@gcsc.uni-giessen.de
