The Image of Women in Classical Athens

The project aims to analyse the representative Athenian imagery of the High Classical period with the representation of women from a cultural perspective. The change in representation visible in sculpture and vase painting is not seen as a change in style in the sense of an artistic development of its own, but is interpreted (including the written sources) as a profound change in the mentality of Athenian society in the period between the Persian Wars and the end of the Peloponnesian War. The question arises as to which social, political and general historical processes the change in the values of Athenian society, which is particularly evident in the image of the woman, can be linked to.             Prof. Dr. Wolfram Martini
