Research Interests

Current Project

Since Feb. 2019, I am in the group of Prof. Dr. Marc. F. Schetelig as a Ph.D. student. My main objective of the project is to improve the stability and delivery of molecular agents into pest insects for sustainable control.

Professional experience

From March 2016 to Feb. 2018, the focus of the master thesis was to determine the diffusion coefficient of eugenol - the major constituent of clove essential oil - through a column of rice grains. The primary purpose of the project was to assess the suitability of essential oils to protect stored grains in large/industrial scale.

As laboratory assistant at the Department of Agricultural Engineering at the Universidade Federal de Viçosa from July 2013 to Jan 2019, my projects were related to food safety and quality. One of the research topics involving master and Ph.D. students assessed the use of essential oils as possible biopesticides to control insect pests of stored grains. This work involved the extraction of essential oils from plants, determination of their chemical composition by gas chromatography and bioassays to determine acute toxicity and behavioral effects of the essential oils to the insects. Similarly to the use of essential oils as biopesticides, the use of ozone gas to control insect-pests was investigated. Other research topics were related to the use of traditional pesticides and the occurrence of their residues in food. This work involved the development of analytical methods to determine pesticide residues by gas chromatography, different approaches to applying ozone gas to grains and vegetables, and the assessment of food quality after treatments with ozone.

From March 2010 to Jan. 2016, as a student for the BSc degree in Chemical Engineering at the Universidade Federal de Viçosa, I worked in laboratories and industrial settings for different applications. On the Bachelor’s thesis, the purpose was the experimental and mathematical modeling of the absorption of water by oat seeds. The moisture content and the behavior of water absorption by oat seeds are important parameters for industrial processing and storage.
