From March 28 to April 1, 2022, the GCSC hosts an event in the context of our Erasmus+ Strategic Partnership. The program features a series of workshops related to the overall theme of “Short Forms Beyond Borders”, conducted by and with our partners from Angers, Athens, Leuven, Santiago de Compostela, and Szeged.
Doctoral candidates, MA students as well as faculty members at JLU who would like to participate can register via email to Somaye.Rezaei@gcsc.uni-giessen.de.
It is possible to register for particular workshops instead of the entire event. Please indicate which part of the program you would like to participate in.
The event will take place at the new GCSC building on the campus Philosophikum I (Otto-Behaghel-Straße 12, between the UB and Alter Steinbacher Weg). Depending on the authorities’ decisions regarding the prolongation of current safety measures, participants might be required to provide proof of their vaccination/recovery status and wear masks during the entire event.

Short Forms@Work I: Presenting (Research) Projects on YouTube (Robin Schmieder, Katharina Stornig, Michael Basseler) |
In this workshop, we will explore what makes for a good project presentation on YouTube (or other video-based social media). As a first step, we will discuss the goals, challenges, criteria and ingredients of very short oral presentations (“elevator pitches”). In a second step, we will transfer these to the media environment and technical requirements of video-based social media. The primary goal of this workshop is to provide the participants with the basic knowledge and skills needed for producing their own video presentations. |

Short Forms@Work II: Scientific Miniatures and Other Short Forms in Higher Education Learning (Katrin Lehnen, Gießen) |
The workshop deals with short forms of scientific writing. In school contexts, these include task formats such as material-supported, intertextual writing; in university contexts, text forms such as the so-called discourse or controversy presentation. What they have in common is that they initiate the acquisition of scientific writing skills by focussing on domain-specific text procedures. In the workshop, exemplary tasks and materials will be analyzed and discussed. |

Short Forms@Work III: Creative Short Forms (Kirsten von Hagen, Jana Keidel, Nirina Ralantaoritsimba) |
The workshop will focus on perspectives on how short forms of storytelling and writing - such as entries in Cultural A, B, C - can be used meaningfully in teaching. Both research perspectives and didactic tools will be explored in depth. The unit, which is accompanied by a writer, is supplemented by a practical part in which the participants themselves can try out short forms and creative writing in the classroom in changing roles. |

Short Forms@Work IV: Using the Baludik App (Léo Roy, Angers, Juliette Sacilotto, Baludik) |
Baludik is a GPS-based app originally designed for digital treasure hunts. In the context of our Erasmus+ Strategic Partnership, the uses of the app have been expanded to include didactic itineraries relating to our project theme “Short Forms Beyond Borders,” as the application proposes a series of short forms connected by a narrative thread. The general objectives of this two-part workshop are to acquaint participants with the basic functions and technological requirements (part 1) and to present the app and its potential uses as a creative space within educational settings, presenting the conception of a scenario developed by our partners from Angers (part 2). On Thursday and Friday, there will also be an opportunity for hands-on work with the app (creation of a mini-course), supervised by Léo Roy, Cécile Meynard, and Michelle Ryan-Sautour.

Short Forms@Work V: Pecha Kucha Presentations (Benjamin Roers, Gießen) |
This workshop is all about the short presentation technique called "Pecha Kucha" (Japanese for a babble of voices). Though based on rigid formal guidelines, it promises to be a vivid and entertaining way to exemplify your research or any other topic – in exactly 6:40 minutes.
After Pecha Kucha has been be introduced, methodically explained and illustrated by examples, we will try to conceptualize and create own short presentations for our projects.

Short Forms@Work VI: Pedagogical training for teachers working with young migrants (George Androulakis, Athens) |
Education in emergencies, such as education appopriate for refugee students who fled wars and did not receive regular schooling, demands rapid, flexible and effective training for teachers. Objectives of such training include a first part of understanding the challenges and raise of awareness, and a second part of resources exploration and building of communities of practice. |
