Projektbeschreibung

This dissertation examines the imagination of Macedonia in the age of imperialism (1878-1913) that appeared in the form of the Macedonian Question (Vilayet-i Selase Sorunu) as competition between different state policies. Thus, the intentions of the thesis are to analyze (1) the Great Powers’ imagination of Ottoman Macedonia and their non-forcible intervention; (2) the Ottoman ‘borrowed colonialism’ and ‘mission civilisatrice’ toward three vilayets (Selanik, Manastir and Kosovo); and (3) the policies of Balkan states through the lenses of ‘small power imperialism’ and the intervention that escalated into the Balkan wars with the slogan “Balkan belongs to the Balkan people”. Based on trans-regional, trans-national and trans-imperial perspectives, the aim of the study is to respond to the questions: Why the Macedonian Question became contested among the Great powers and the Balkan states in the ‘Age of Empire’? How was Macedonia imagined? How did this imagination among various actors (states, intelligentsia and guerrillas) result in an escalation of violence in symbolic and physical forms?
